Gratin is a dish wherein ingredients are topped with any combination of egg, butter, or breadcrumbs and it achieves a light brown crust. In French, au gratin means “with a crust.” Potato gratin is often served as a side dish, but there are also main dish preparations of gratin featuring vegetables that are popular with those who enjoy a plant-based diet.
